Earlier this month, Stepan’s Global Technology Center (GTC) welcomed 24 students from Northtown CICS College Prep High School for an R&D field trip focused on hands-on STEM learning. The visit is part of a long-standing community outreach partnership with Teach for America designed to connect students with real-world science experiences.
During the visit, students learned about Stepan, our core chemistries, and how innovation takes shape through Research & Development (R&D). Through interactive demonstrations and small-group activities, they explored new concepts, engaged with Stepan scientists, and gained a closer look at STEM career pathways.
Hands-on learning highlights
· Formulating a personal hand soap to take home
· Exploring fermentation and how microorganisms drive chemical processes
· Running a controlled chemical reaction to create a rigid polymer
· Analyzing sugars in beverages using basic lab techniques
· Measuring product pH and discussing applications in agriculture
· Observing microorganisms under the microscope
From lab demonstrations to guided tours, our team enjoyed giving students a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work in the chemical industry.
Experiences like this help spark curiosity, build confidence, and support students as they envision futures in STEM. Stepan is proud to invest in our community, and we look forward to continuing this partnership and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
