Stepan’s Ecatepec, Mexico team recently achieved a meaningful sustainability win by improving the efficiency of the site’s cooling system and maximizing the value of existing assets.
The opportunity began with aging cooling tower infrastructure that was operating at low efficiency. Rather than replacing the units, the team identified excess capacity in existing high-efficiency cooling towers that were not being fully utilized. By rerouting additional cooling water capacity, the team created a more simplified, integrated cooling system that improved performance while supporting the site’s sustainability goals.
The project delivered measurable environmental and operational benefits, including lower energy consumption, reduced water consumption and future maintenance cost savings. The improved electrical efficiency also helped reduce an estimated 100 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. The project reflects the type of practical, site-led problem solving that helps Stepan continue making progress across its sustainability priorities.
